About the Author
George C. “Chris” Ortloff is an American author, former journalist, and former New York State Assemblyman whose life has spanned local historical writing, public service, and a highly publicized criminal conviction. A native of Lake Placid and a Vietnam War veteran, Ortloff initially built a career as a news anchor and served as the director of medals ceremonies for the 1980 Winter Olympics before serving ten terms in the state Legislature from 1986 to 2006. As a writer, he is best known for his local true-crime history book, A Lady in the Lake: The True Account of Death and Discovery in Lake Placid, which chronicles a bizarre 1963 underwater discovery. However, his public career ended in disgrace following a 2008 federal sting operation, which led to a 2010 conviction and a 12.5-year prison sentence for attempting to arrange sexual encounters with minors.
